DABOR Receives National Grant for Expanding Housing Opportunities
Dearborn, Michigan (May 12, 2025) –DABOR was awarded a $1,000 grant from the National Association of Realtors®’ Housing Opportunity Program to support activities that create and expand affordable housing opportunities. The grant was used towards an educational presentation with book club on book Evicted Pulitzer Prize winning author, Matthew Desmond.
The books were distributed for free to interested members to gain better understanding of the recent past and current eviction process and how easily it is for someone or families to face eviction in the United States (young families with one breadwinner, seniors, veterans, simple moms with kids, disabled adults). Attendees also gained a better understanding of how the local courts are working to prevent eviction and promote a deeper understanding for our REALTORS® on affordable housing issues and property rights for all.
Honorable Steve Bieda led the Q+A discussion on ways to break the cycle and keep people in a home and out of temporary shelters or the streets. “Realtors® build communities and work hard to make the American Dream a reality for millions of Americans each year,” said DABOR President Sam Sakka. “This grant will help raise awareness about the need for more housing opportunities in Metro Detroit Area while supporting our fight to increase the availability of affordable housing units. Because of these Housing Opportunity Grants, homeownership will now be attainable for countless additional families across this community.”
DABOR Association Executive, Andrea Kuentz on how this will positively make a difference for attendees, “Located in Wayne county, just steps from Detroit, we are a very racially divided metro Detroit, we have a strong interest in correcting the wrongs of the past with redlining and segregation of groups not allowed to buy homes in certain areas. We also have a history of diversity and take the Realtor® standards seriously of home ownership for the protected classes. We wish to remain a model and a resource for information and assistance.”
Nationwide, NAR offers Housing Opportunity Grants to various state and local Realtor® Associations in effort to support a wide range of housing opportunity initiatives, including housing symposia; home buyer education or housing fairs; counseling and financial literacy efforts; housing needs studies; and Realtor® affordable housing education.
